Magnificent and majestic to behold, Inyan’s mountains rose high and took on the sharpness of peaks, the flatness of bluffs. He became rock and stone. Life flowed around him and through him.

Chapter Seven

Red Thunder paced in his lodge. He glared at the eagle whistle. He’d called Blaze many times. Was she making good on her word that she wasn’t going to help him? If so, what was he going to do? How was he going to keep the girl quiet? If she refused to help him heal, it would ruin everything he’d worked so hard to achieve.

Standing in his doorway, he stared out at the village. As was his due as a medicine man, his lodge was placed near the center. Across from him, the chief and his family had their lodge. On either side were the clans of the Wolf and Turtle.

He liked his position in the village, the high regard and importance that until yesterday he’d accepted as his due. If the girl exposed him, he’d be forced to leave.

Years ago, when he’d first wandered into the village, he’d found it easy to convince the elders and chief that his tribe was gone, that he and his young daughter had no home. He’d been welcomed, and over the years, he’d earned their trust.

Since the early dawn, he’d heard snatches of conversation outside his lodge. Everyone was talking about how Blaze had brought Walks Like Turtle back to life after he, their medicine man, had refused to help. He’d even heard whispers suggesting his daughter was a holy woman.

Red Thunder turned and paced angrily. It was he who should be shaman, should have been appointed shaman after that old fool died. He glared across at the longhouse of the chief and his family.

For years he’d been trying to gain that status. Had the girl confided in him the true extent of her abilities, he’d have already had the title and all that went with it. What other powers did she have that she’d hidden from him?

Pulling a cord from around his neck, he studied the two stones threaded onto it. Both stones were so deep a red that they appeared nearly black and both cold. Neither ever warmed, no matter that he wore them against his skin. Even wrapping them in a hot piece of leather didn’t take the chill away, as though the death of their owners somehow affected these two stones.

The stones held power. Great power. They had to. He just didn’t know how to access that power. But
